Hypnosis FAQs

What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a level of deep relaxation, and is a naturally occurring state of
awareness and consciousness in which a person is more inclined to be open to
outside suggestions.  A naturally occurring hypnotic state can also happen
whenever a person is deeply relaxed, and/or focused, such as watching
television, driving and reading.

Can anyone become hypnotized?
Anyone who truly wants to be hypnotized can be hypnotized.  Some people are
completely open to it, some resist, and some are completely closed.

What are the most common fears about hypnosis?
Most people fear surrendering the will, telling secrets, not “coming out of it”,
failing, or acting in some way that will humiliate them.

These fears are based mostly on not understanding what hypnosis is, and isn’t.
Hypnosis does not make you unconscious.  You are in control.  In the hypnotic
state you can refuse to accept suggestions, move, scratch, or end the session.
Subjects usually hear and remember 50% to 100% of everything, depending on
their level of relaxation and attention.

Another source of fear is based on seeing “entertainment” hypnosis on TV,
movies and in shows. Those hypnotists are skilled at distinguishing the 10% of
the population who are unusually deep subjects and go quickly into hypnosis.
They often don’t remember anything that occurred during the session.  That isn’t
the case for the other 90% of the population who are very much aware and in
control.

What does hypnosis feel like?
Most people describe the hypnotic state as being extremely relaxing, peaceful
and uplifting.  The most common physical changes can include a slight tingly or
numb feeling, a feeling of heaviness or a sensation of lightness.  Some have a
desire to swallow more often, have slight body twitches, move their eyes, and all
experience a change in breathing.

How does hypnosis work?
Hypnosis works by consciously accessing the subconscious mind in a deeply
relaxed state to review patterns and memories associated with unwanted
behaviors, limitations, and self-sabotaging beliefs in order to release and replace
them with positive, affirming suggestions for change.

The subconscious mind has no ability to judge, rationalize or analyze.  It acts
automatically with whatever is “programmed” into it.  Sometimes situations occur
repeatedly in our lives that cause patterns to form that can negatively affect us.  An
example would be experiencing ongoing criticism that you are stupid, lazy or
unattractive.  You begin to automatically act as though you are stupid, lazy and
unattractive because that is what has been “programmed” into your
subconscious. You can change those negative imprints by replacing them with
positive suggestions that you are intelligent, productive and attractive and affirm
that until it is an automatic new pattern.  The same applies to all patterns you
choose to release and create.

How many sessions does it take for hypnosis to work?
It usually takes 3  - 5 hypnosis sessions, depending on the issues at hand.  It
helps to affirm new positive suggestions by listening to positive suggestions on
tape or CD for approximately 21 to 30 consecutive days to change it from a
concept to a reality.  Results vary because of the differences in people and
issues, the level of openness to hypnosis, and commitment to the goal.
